Warm, custardy, lightly spiced with cinnamon and vanilla. This French toast casserole is perfect for brunch or a make-ahead breakfast!

Another serving, please!

Honestly, I love this recipe! I’ll get cravings all the time, and what’s perfect is that it’s made with very basic ingredients that you’ll most likely have sitting around your house already.

And it’s great for anytime! Enjoy it during your Sunday brunch (with mimosas lol). Make it the night before and pop it in the oven the next morning during the week. Or, literally, make it just cause.

Whatever, or whenever, it is your feeling, you’ll just know you’ll want to have seconds.

Warm, custardy, lightly spiced with cinnamon and vanilla

Ingredients

For the casserole

  • 1 10oz. baguette

  • 8 large eggs

  • 2 cups heavy cream

  • 3/4 cups brown sugar, packed

  • 1 tbsp vanilla

  • 1 tsp cinnamon

  • 1/2 tsp nutmeg

  • 1/4 tsp salt

For the topping

  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour

  • 1/2 cup brown sugar, packed

  • 1 tsp cinnamon

  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, cold

Instructions

1. Prepare the baking dish:

  • Spray a 9x13 baking dish with non-stick spray. Cut baguette into 1-inch cubes and place in the baking dish in an even layer.

2. Make the custard:

  • In a large bowl, whisk together, eggs, heavy cream, brown sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt.

3. Soak bread:

  • Pour the custard evenly over the bread. Gently press the cubes down to ensure they absorb the egg mixture.

4. Chill:

  • Place the casserole dish in the fridge and chill for at least 30 minutes, or up to overnight if making ahead.

5. Add topping:

  • Mix flour, brown sugar, and cinnamon in a smaller separate bowl. Thinly slice cold butter, and add to the bowl, working ingredients into a crumble.

6. Bake:

  • Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake uncovered for 40-45 minutes, until golden and set in the center.

7. Serve:

  • Let cool slightly. Serve warm with a drizzle of maple syrup, fresh berries, or powdered sugar.
